Choose a Host

To begin wiki'ing, you likely need to have an account with a wiki service provider.

Wiki is an open source software, meaning anyone can have it for free. But most of us will use wiki software that is provided by a host site.

The host "holds" the wiki we build, which is nice, because then it doesn't take up any space on our computer hard drive or school server.

In return, the "host" markets something to us (so they can stay in business providing this service!) Luckily, many hosts provide free "protected" space for K-12 educators and school children. (Ostensibly as a public service -- but we are also training their future consumers.) Most educational hosts will remove advertising from educational wikis. Here is more information on Choosing a Host.

Create an Account

Set up an account with a host. You will need to include:

Name -- use your real name, this is for educational purposes so you aren't going to do anything you wouldn't want tracked and you will want people to be able to notify you if something goes wrong or one of your students discovers the key to world peace or cold fusion.

Email account -- use your school email, this is how the host knows you are a teacher

Password -- this is private between you and the host -- write this down if you are likely to forget it. Simple rules for making a strong and memorable password are to combine the first letter of every word in a phrase or sentence that includes some numbers or symbols such as: I love to use PBWorks for my Wiki. Would be Il2uPBW4mw.

Log In and Bookmark the Page

If you use Firefox, which works best with PBWorks, you can drag the PB in the address bar onto your browser tool bar. This is very handy for later reference. If you Diigo, add it to your library.  If you have a school web page, link it there.

Somehow, make sure you'll find this page again!

General Notes on PBWiki Use

  • This wiki works better in Firefox than in Internet Explorer. If you have trouble accessing it check your browser.

  • This wiki requires you to allow cookies. If it won't let you edit (you get a white screen when you click edit) go to the Tools button, choose Options, choose to Allow Cookies. (If this doesn't help you might need to "clean your cache" in your browser -- meaning you have too many cookies.Restart and try again.)

  • The most important three things to remember are: "Log in" click "Edit" when you want to make changes and "Save" when you are finished. ; )

  • The only "tricky" thing to remember is that when you are in "View" mode there is a little triangle in the upper right hand corner of the View screen. (Under your email address roughly.) This magic triangle makes the sidebar appear or disappear. Both can be good things depending on what you are trying to do. Don't forget the magic triangle!

  • If you have trouble: Don't Panic! PBWorks  is very helpful.
